Prevention, Health Literacy and SRHR

Part of YouThrive Health

Knowledge and
Confidence for Healthier Choices.

Adolescents and young people make important decisions about their health, relationships and future every day. Prevention, Health Literacy and SRHR helps them strengthen their health knowledge, ask questions with greater confidence and make more informed choices about their wellbeing.

Why This Matters

Young people need
information they can
understand and trust.

Adolescence and early adulthood bring new questions about health, relationships, sexuality, identity and wellbeing.

Young people receive information from many places — friends, family, social media, school and their communities. It is not always accurate, complete or easy to apply to their own lives, and sensitive health questions can be difficult to raise openly.

YouThrive Health creates supportive opportunities for adolescents and young people to build reliable health knowledge, explore the questions that matter to them and strengthen their confidence to decide well.

The goal is not simply to provide information. It is to help young people understand their options, recognise when they need support and know where to find it.

Who is Prevention, Health Literacy and SRHR for?

The programme supports adolescents and young people who are building the knowledge, confidence and skills they need to make informed decisions about their health, relationships and wellbeing.

Content and delivery can be adapted to different ages, settings and implementation contexts.

What does SRHR mean?

SRHR stands for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights. It includes access to accurate information, supportive services and the knowledge young people need to understand their bodies, relationships, choices and rights.

What areas does the programme address?

The programme brings together health literacy, sexual and reproductive health and rights, healthy relationships, consent, personal safety, mental wellbeing and health-seeking behaviour.

The focus is not simply on providing information. Young people are supported to understand their options, ask questions and recognise when and where they may need additional support.

Is this the same as YouThrive Schools?

No. Prevention, Health Literacy and SRHR is a programme area within YouThrive Health.

Relevant health content can be integrated into YouThrive Schools, but this programme area can also be delivered independently in other settings.

Can the programme be delivered outside schools?

Yes. Delivery is not limited to schools. YouThrive Health interventions can be adapted for community programmes, youth-focused services and other settings where adolescents and young people can be reached.

Can healthcare workers and CBO staff deliver the programme?

Yes. Depending on the implementation model, healthcare workers, community-based organisation staff and other implementers can be trained and supported to facilitate relevant YouThrive Health interventions within their own settings.

What is YouThrive Let's Chat?

YouThrive Let's Chat is a facilitated flip-file job aid used by healthcare workers, CBO staff and other implementers who have completed training in the YouThrive Health curriculum.

It provides visual guidance for facilitated conversations across topics including HIV, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Mental Health, Gender-Based Violence, Supportive Transition and Maternal and Child Health.

Can I download the YouThrive Let's Chat job aid?

YouThrive Let's Chat is not a public, stand-alone resource. It is provided for use by implementers who have been trained in the YouThrive Health curriculum.

Organisations interested in using the approach can contact Zoë-Life to discuss training and implementation.

Does Zoë-Life provide clinical healthcare through this programme?

This programme area focuses on health education, prevention, facilitated conversations, decision-making and support.

Where a young person requires clinical assessment, treatment or another healthcare service, they are supported to connect with appropriate healthcare services.

How can my organisation implement the programme?

Schools, community-based organisations, healthcare services and other partners can work with Zoë-Life to determine which parts of the programme are appropriate for the young people they support.

Depending on the partnership, implementation may include programme adaptation, staff training, implementation support, referral strengthening and ongoing technical assistance.

Support Healthier Choices

Help young people make
informed decisions about
their health.

Young people should be able to ask questions about their health, access information they can trust and know where to turn when they need support.
